Dermaplaning

Our skin is in a constant state of shedding and regrowth. Did you know that we shed up to 2 pounds of dead skin every year? Exfoliation helps our skin to look more luminous, youthful and healthy. Exfoliation also helps us to absorb our products better and helps regulate skin problems that arise from excess buildup of oil and dead cells on the surface of our skin, referred to as the Stratum Corneum.

As we age, our skin cell turnover slows down dramatically. Teenage skin regenerates completely every 10-28 days, whereas the skin at the age of 40 year old regenerates every 45-60 days. For a beautiful complexion, it’s important to stimulate the cell turnover of the skin, as well as remove the stagnant, dead skin on the surface. Dermaplaning helps remove up to 21 days of dead skin cells as well as improve the look of lines and wrinkles and soften the appearance of dark spots and melasma. The exfoliation of the skin from dermaplaning promotes the production of collagen and elastin, helping to improve the appearance of signs of aging and scarring.

Dermaplaning is a relaxing, painless and chemical-free method of removing dead skin buildup with the use of a #10 rounded tip surgical steel blade. With meticulous and careful strokes, your Certified Advanced Aesthetician will gently caress the skin with a sterile blade, removing not only the top layer of your skin, but the vellus hairs (aka peach fuzz) that appear on the face, creating a dull appearance. Skin is left buttery-smooth and glowing, and is an ideal canvas for makeup or skincare products.

Dermpaplaning can also be used as a pre-treatment to procedures like microneedling, HydraFacial or a chemical peel to encourage deeper penetration of product and a more pronounced result.

Dermaplaning requires no downtime and is a great treatment before a special evening or whenever you need to be camera-ready. Everyone can enjoy the benefits of dermaplaning, as it’s safe for all skin types and considered non-invasive. Bring your best face forward.

Frequently asked questions

What is Dermaplaning?

Dermaplaning is a more aggressive, pain free form of physical exfoliation that uses a small rounded tip #10 surgical blade to manually remove up to 3 weeks of dry, dead skin cells.

What Skin Conditions Does Dermaplaning Help?

Dermaplaning is recommended to treat dry, rough skin, acne scarring, uneven skin tone, large pore size, fine lines and unwanted vellus facial hairs-not terminal hairs. Dermaplaning increases product absorption and efficacy. It promotes a smooth texture, brightens skin, reduces hyperpigmentation, creates a clear complexion and is beneficial for overall skin rejuvenation, as it boosts the production of collagen and elastin. Makeup application is smooth and flawless.

Is There Downtime Post Treatment?

There is no downtime post-dermaplaning treatment and you can resume your normal activities immediately following the treatment. There are, however, a few precautions to keep in mind in order to achieve optimal results and a positive experience. See the post care section for more information.

Preparing for Your Dermaplaning Treatment

Discontinue exfoliation for 5-7 days prior to scheduled treatment. This includes physical exfoliation (scrubs, Clarisonic) and chemical exfoliation (salicylic, retinol, glycolic, lactic acid, etc.). If using prescription topical exfoliants such as Differin, Aczone, Tretinoin, Retina-A, etc., it is recommended that usage be discontinued a full week prior to treatment.

Post Care Instructions:

Your skin may be slightly sensitive and have a pink appearance post treatment, similar to a sunburn. Excessive sweating and exercise should be avoided for 24 hours post treatment to reduce irritation. Discontinue use of all chemical and physical exfoliants like facial scrubs and manual facial brushes for 10 days post treatment.

When Should You Schedule Your Next Treatment?

This treatment can be done as a quarterly maintenance plan or in a series of 3-6 consecutive monthly treatments. Your Luxe Laser Certified Advanced Esthetician will help determine the most appropriate treatment plan for your skin.

Dermaplaning Contraindications:

Current inflamed acne, pregnant or lactating, severe melasma, skin cancer on face, active cold sores, uncontrolled type 1 diabetes, dermatitis including eczema and/or psoriasis, open skin lesions, use of Accutane within the last 6 months
